The EKU Brand Name
The name "EKU" comes from the
latin word or "crown" - the crown seen on each
EKU Bavaria label, and a fitting symbol for beer at its best.
"EKU" is also derived from the German name "Erste
Kulmbacher Actienbrauerei" which is also on every EKU
Bavaria label and is the name of the German brewery which
authorises the worldwide production of EKU Bavaria under licence.
The History of Beer in Kulmbach
The original EKU brewery is in Kulmbach,
a town that nestles in the forests and hills of Bavaria, Southern
Germany, and since EKU was first brewed there in 1972,
Kulmbach has always been one of the biggest names in the German
beer industry.
|
|
 |
In 1900 for example, Kulmbach's population of 12,000 could boast no less than 24 breweries in their town, and even today over 30,000 inhabitants of Kulmbach earn their living from the beer industry. Only two breweries are still in operation in Kulmbach, the largest being the EKU brewery. |
| EKU
Expansion
From its original volume capacity in Kulmbach
in 1872 of under 300,000 crates per year, EKU has grown
to the point of being the flagship brand of the second biggest
brewing group in Germany, producing over 33 million crates
of beer annually. No small achievement in the world's most
competitive beer market with over 2000 breweries currently
operating! EKU Bavaria continues to enter new markets
across the world either as exports from Germany, or as a nationally
brewed premium beer produced under licence in selected breweries
only, as it is currently, for example in Togo, St Vincent,
Seychelles and the Solomon Islands. |
|
| EKU
as a Premium Beer
The EKU brewery in Kulmbach authorises
an EKU Bavaria brewing licence only to breweries that
achieve a consistently excellent level of quality in their
product range. As with all our brands, EKU Bavaria
is subject to vigorous quality controls both for the beer
itself and for the packaging materials, and this ensures that
the EKU Bavaria produced here is always of the highest
possible standard. |
|
| Why
drink EKU Bavaria?
On each EKU Bavaria label, are six
gold medals, three on either side of the EKU crown,
and these were awarded for consistent outstanding quality.
These demanding standards are guaranteed by EKU Bavaria's
technical specifications that help to produce the brand's
more refined, smoother taste so appreciated by the true beer
drinker across the world. The EKU crown sits easily
on each EKU Bavaria label as a symbol of the history
and excellence of this world-famous beer. |
|
| The
EKU Bavaria Man |
|
|
| On
the label of each bottle of EKU Bavaria sits the EKU
Bavaria Man, in honour of the postillion rider who would be
on each four or six-horse coach that delivered barrels of
EKU in the older days. As he went from tavern to inn,
from inn to guesthouse, the EKU Bavaria Man would try
to ensure no customer ever ran out of stock. In fact, he would
only slow down his frantic delivery service for a highly welcome
EKU Bavaria at each call he made. |

| EKU
in Seychelles
EKU was
launched in the Seychelles in 1984 as a premium lager and has since
been a very successful brand. Its success and that of its Seychellois
drinkers has brought about its new advertising slogan: |

Be Responsible.
If you drink, don't drive.
