THE SHOALS OF CAPRICORN PROGRAMME IN SEYCHELLES
GUINNESS and Seychelles Breweries have shown their commitment to the continuous protection of the Seychelles environment through a 2-year financial commitment to the Shoals of Capricorn Programme, totaling £80,000 (equivalent of 750,000 Seychelles rupees).
Since 1999, the funding has enabled Shoals to establish a permanent marine education course (based at the National Institute of Education) and various in-service workshops for teachers and Wildlife Club Leaders. School groups visiting Ste. Anne have benefited, enabling students to gain a hands-on approach to understanding the marine environment. It has also supported several visits by Shoals UK based Education Co-ordinator, Ms Sarah Welton who has provided advice to the Government with respect to the curriculum development, and the creation of a marine Roaming Display.
Lord Selbourne (Chairman of the Shoals of Capricorn Programme Board of Directors) was in Seychelles in May 1999 to receive the first sponsorship payment from the Managing Director for GUINNESS in the Africa region, David Hampshire.
The Marine Roaming Displays were launched on Monday 27th August 2001 at the Natural History Museum. The Displays are the result of all the hard work and collaborative efforts between the staff at Shoals, the Natural History Museum and Birdlife Seychelles. The Displays are suitable for all educational establishments, businesses to display in their canteens and foyers for the benefit of employees, and for hotels to educate tourists about the natural heritage in Seychelles.
It was indeed a privilege for Seychelles Breweries to receive the visit of HRH Prince Michael of Kent (Patron of the Shoals of Capricorn Programme) at its headquarters in October 2001 where a representative of Shoals introduced HRH to one of the impressive Roaming Displays on exhibit at the O'Brien House.

A three day practical marine education course has been specifically designed for Seychellois trainee teachers based at the National Institute for Education, and are full of practical ideas to bring the marine environment alive for children.

To date, over 80 teachers and 6 staff based at the National Institute of Education (NIE) have been trained.

The Guinness funding has lead to the production of a comprehensive teaching manual, ensuring that the course will be continued by existing NIE staff into the future.
The final sponsorship payment of the 2-year deal was made in July 2001 and the Director for Shoals, Mrs. Juliet Burnett was in Seychelles to receive the payment from the Managing Director for Seychelles Breweries, Patrick Dousset.
