GUINNESS's history began in Dublin, Ireland, more than 200 years
ago when, in 1759, Arthur Guinness founded a business, which
was to become one of the world's leading brewing companies.
He soon started to brew a new dark roasted barely beer which
he called extra stout porter. Today it is the most famous black
beer in the world, GUINNESS stout.
The company's international profile was established early, with
flourishing exports of a strong stout brewed to survive long
sea voyages. In the 20th century, brewing began to expand overseas,
often in partnership with local brewers.
GUINNESS stout is
still the jewel in the crown of the company portfolio and
is the world's leading stout brand, brewed in 50 countries
